UFC 109: Relentless
Date: Feb 06, 2010
The UFC 109 event is expected to take place Super Bowl
weekend at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
The UFC didn’t have to look to long for a replacement to
face Paulo Thiago at UFC 109, as Mike Swick will step in to
replace his fallen American Kickboxing Academy teammate,
Josh Koscheck, at the February 6th event. |

Swick (14-3) had won 9 of his last
10, including four-straight at 170-pounds, before dropping a
unanimous decision to upcoming welterweight challenger Dan Hardy
in November. The loss marked his first since dropping down to
welterweight in
2008.
After upsetting Koscheck with a first-round knockout in his UFC
debut in February, Paulo Thiago, boasts a 12-1 mark of his own
and with seven of his victories coming via submission. The
Brazilian’s only loss came at the hands of his American
Kickboxing Academy teammate Jon Fitch at UFC 100.
Other fights on the card include Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman
and Frank Trigg vs. Matt Serra.
Mark Coleman vs. Randy Couture
The bout will mark the first time UFC hall of famers have met in
the Octagon. Both former heavyweight champions, Couture was
originally slated to face Coleman at UFC 17 in May 1998 in
Mobile, Ala., before the four-time Olympic alternate hurt his
ribs
prepping for that year’s Greco-Roman wrestling Nationals.
Instead, Coleman fought Pete Williams, a then unknown Lion’s Den
protégé, and was knocked out with a head kick just past the
12-minute mark. The accomplished wrestlers’ paths did not cross
again, until now.
Couture is a cerebral fighter that will have significant
advantages on defense, striking ability and stamina. Coleman is
a “tough guy” but he does not have the versatility to keep up
with Couture. Coleman has lost 3 of his last 4 fights and
Couture's effectiveness in the clinch and cardio conditioning
should help him score a stoppage.
Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg
A welterweight bout between former champion Matt Serra (9-6 MMA,
6-6 UFC) and one-time top contender Frank Trigg (19-7 MMA, 2-4
UFC) are set to do battle.
Serra (9-6) has fought just twice since his shocking upset of
welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre in April 2007, dropping
back-to-back bouts to St-Pierre in April 2008 and Hughes in May
2009.
Trigg, meanwhile, is fighting for his life in the organization.
He went 2-3 in the UFC during his first stint (2003 to 2005)
with a couple title losses to then-champ Hughes. However, after
leaving the organization, he eventually defeated Jason "Mayhem"
Miller for the Rumble of the Rock middleweight title, dropped to
welterweight, and posted six wins in a seven-fight span to earn
his way back into the UFC. The 37-year-old then met fellow
former NCAA Division I wrestler Josh Koscheck at UFC 103 in
September and suffered a first-round TKO loss. One more loss and
Frank Trigg will be looking to fight in another organization.
